Volkswagen Golf, Tiguan and Amarok selling up a storm
German company's big three on a roll, but better news for the brand is the average transaction price...
A supply-constrained Volkswagen Australia has issued a release celebrating strong sales for its top three models in June, even though its overall tally dipped slightly over the same month last year.
Still, credit where it's due: the Golf, Tiguan and Amarok all claimed records during the year's busiest month, a period where the whole industry goes into overdrive for end of financial year.
Of most importance to the German company is the fact that it didn't rely on rampant discounting, with most sales coming on higher grade cars.
Leading the pack was the Golf with 2317 sales, its best haul since the Mk7.5 update last year.
VW claims most of these retailed above $30k, though the entry price is $23,990, and said 25 per cent were the most expensive GTI and R hot models.
Meanwhile the Tiguan medium SUV drew in a record 1340 buyers, thanks in part to the launch of its seven-seat Allspace derivative.
Top-seller was the 162TSI flagship version, accounting for 40 per cent of sales, while the wait lists (were up to seven months for a while there) are being reduced.
It was a record month also for the Amarok, which managed 1250 sales, overtaking the previous best of 1230 in 2015.
Somewhat remarkably, VW claims that 70 per cent of all Amaroks sold are now the V6 TDI, which has an average price north of $60,000.
Yeesh, there's some margin there... The V6 will only get stronger, too, when its sub-$50k Core variant arrives later this year.
Off to a slow-ish start is the new Polo, though Volkswagen Group Australia managing director Michael Bartsch said that "drastic shortages will be addressed by the end of this month".
The full range of Polos - including R-Line, Beats and GTI - will be available in August.
“Thanks to our customers for their continued faith in the Volkswagen brand and also for their patience,” Bartsch said.
“Demand for our three top models continually exceeds supply. We are doing our utmost to address this imposition.”
What appears clear is the Volkswagen may not be selling record numbers overall, but its model mix is 'richer' than it's ever been.
In further VGA news, subsidiary Skoda also had a strong month with 642 sales, up about 8 per cent on June 2017's haul.
