Audi could be working on Q9 flagship – report

Company boss hints that larger, more luxurious crossover is a possibility.

The Audi Q8 may have just launched to sit at the pinnacle of the brand's SUV tree, but there could be a new king of Audi 'Qs' should the market demand it – according to a new report out of the UK.

Speaking with Autocar at the reveal of the Q8 (pictured) in Shenzen, China last month, CEO Rupert Stadler (who has since been arrested by German authorities, read up on that here) left the door open for an even more luxurious model.

When asked by the British publication whether Audi is planning a 'Q9', Stadler responded with: "Time will tell".

"The customers will tell us what they want in the future," he added.

During the event in China, Stadler also confirmed with Autocar that a plug-in hybrid Q8 is on the way – which will likely feature the same powertrain as the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid – and that an RS Q8 is 'likely'.

We've already seen prototypes for the latter testing in Europe, so we reckon the performance halo is a lot closer than the CEO was willing to tell.

Back to the supposed 'Q9', though. Such a model for the four-ringed marque would give it a proper rival to the likes of the Range Rover.

Other luxury-focused rivals at the pointy end of the SUV segment include the related Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan, making it an all-British affair (though the Bentley is largely German-owned and engineered) at the pinnacle of the crossover market.

However, Mercedes-Benz is reportedly preparing a Maybach version of the next-gen GLS, while high-spec versions of the upcoming BMW X7 should also compete with the high-end crossovers.

Nothing has been officially confirmed at this stage, however, so we'll have to wait and see as to whether Audi decides to expand its line-up further.
