Porsche 919 Evo smashes all-time Nurburgring record – video

Modified ex-Le Mans racer breaks the six-minute barrier

The Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo has smashed the long-running lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, posting a time of 5 minutes 19.55 seconds.

Driven by Timo Bernhard, the 919 Hybrid Evo managed an average speed of 233.8km/h, and bested the previous 1983 record set by Stefan Bellof in a Porsche 956 C by a whole 51.58 seconds.

To top off the big numbers, Bernhard hit a top speed of 369.4km/h during his record-beating run.

It's now the second lap record achieved by the 919 Hybrid Evo, after it broke the lap record at Spa Francorchamps in April this year.

The 919 Hybrid Evo is based on the successful Le Mans-winning 919 Hybrid race car. It's been modified to develop 1160hp (865kW) from its hybrid powertrain, and generates 50 per cent more downforce than the FIA-compliant model thanks to modified and active aerodynamics.

"As a race team we constantly search for challenges that push a car, driver and team to operate on the limit," said Andreas Seid, LMP Team Principal.

"Today we have shown the full potential of the 919 Evo. Congratulations to Timo for his sensational drive."
