Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign teased

First images released of Japanese x Italian collaboration

The Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign has been partially revealed in a set of new images this week, ahead of a full reveal in Europe next month.

It's the first time the Japanese manufacturer and Italian design house have collaborated on a project, which celebrates the 50th anniversaries of both the GT-R and Italdesign.

According to the press materials, Italdesign was tasked with developing, engineering and building the vehicle, while the exterior and interior designs were created by the teams at Nissan Design Europe in London, UK, and Nissan Design America.

Based on a Nissan GT-R Nismo, the GT-R50 by Italdesign has received a bespoke look inside and out, though the overall design is still recognisable as a GT-R.

Up front, there's a golden inner element stretching nearly the full width of the vehicle, while the bonnet 'power bulge' is more pronounced than before.

The vehicle's face is completed with large LED headlights running from the front wheel arches to the lip above the outer cooling intakes.

Looking from the side, the roofline has been lowered by 54mm and "features a lower centre section", while the GT-R's signature 'samurai blade' cooling outlets also gain gold accents.

Out back, the trademark twin 'stove-burner' tail-lights have been redesigned with a 'floating' effect created by thin light rings and hollow centres, while the entire rear section has been finished in gold to make it appear like a "seperate modular element" of the structure. There's also a large adjustable rear wing to finish off the look.

Filling the arches are custom 21-inch alloy wheels (21x10 front, 21x10.5 rear), wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber. The dominating exterior colour is 'Liquid Kinetic Gray', while the secondary hue is 'Energetic Sigma Gold'.

The exterior is just the start, too. Inside, the GT-R50 by Italdesign has been overhauled, bringing a far more modern and focused layout to the cabin.

Lashings of two different carbon-fibre finishes adorn the centre console, instrument panel, and door linings, while the seat fronts are finished in leather and Alcantara.

Matching the exterior highlights are gold accents through the instrument panel, doors, and switchgear – the latter said to be inspired by race cars – while the bespoke steering wheel features a hub and spokes fashioned from carbon-fibre, along with a flat bottom and Alcantara trim.

The GT-R50 by Italdesign is powered by the same 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 as the 'standard' car, though it's been tuned by Nismo to produce an "estimated" 720PS (530kW) of power and 780Nm of torque – up 89kW and 128Nm over the GT-R Nismo.

In order to achieve such a significant gain in grunt, there are new GT3-spec turbocharges, larger intercoolers, heavy-duty crankshaft, pistons, high-flow piston oil, oil jets, revised camshaft profiles, higher-flow fuel injectors, along with optimised ignition, intake and exhaust systems.

Other mechanical changes include a reinforced dual-clutch six-speed rear transaxle, stronger differential and drive shafts, and a revised suspension using Bilstein DampTronic adaptive dampers. There's also six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembo brakes with red-painted calipers.

"Although this is not the next-generation GT-R, it is an exciting celebration of two anniversaries in a provocative and creative way – wrapping one of Nissan’s best engineering platforms and Japanese design with Italian coachbuilding," said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan's senior vice president for global design.

"This is a rare window in time when two big moments intersect: 50 years of Italdesign shaping the automotive world and 50 years of Nissan generating excitement through our iconic GT-R."
