MG and LDV safety ‘to be best in segment’

'There is no doubt that we have to comply with the local regulation, and the second step is for us to be best in the segment'

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) brands MG and LDV are aiming to become the safest brands in each of their segments, having committed to tailoring new-generation safety systems to meet strict local global regulations.

Speaking with CarAdvice at the MG research and development centre in Shanghai, vice general manager of the SAIC motor commercial vehicle technical centre, Mingshi Xie, admitted meeting China’s relatively relaxed safety standards won't be enough for MG and LDV going forward.

“There is no doubt that we have to comply with the local regulation, and the second step is for us to be best in the segment,” Xie said.

“I know that with the T60 we are developing for Australia and Chile, and D90, both of them are meeting and passed Australian ANCAP five-star standards.”

The story is similar at MG, which had its first five-star ANCAP-rated car with last year's GS, but still offers the MG 3 and MG 6 with their three- and four-star safety ratings respectively.

“We want to bring the safest vehicles to the market, the GS launched in the Australian market with five stars. For the future, all newly launched products [will be similar]. We still want to bring the most safety products into the market,” Matt Lei, deputy managing director of SAIC Motor international business, said.

The updated MG 3 arriving in August won't be retested by ANCAP, with the existing three-star safety rating set to carry over. The same applies to the updated MG 6, which at this stage might not even come to Australia.

The advancement of safety standards for Chinese brands comes at a time when safety regulations continue to become stricter], with new cars requiring modern active technology likeas autonomous emergency braking to qualify for the top score. Nonetheless, five-star vehicles tested under more relaxed regulations can carry that rating forward.

Would the benefit of a five-star safety rating with the same sharp pricing of the MG and LDV vehicles persuade you to put the Chinese brands in your consideration set?
