Kia Proceed concept headed for production – report

Korean brand set to launch new shooting brake next year

It may have been used to preview the new Ceed hatchback, but the Kia Proceed concept could be launched as a production model sometime in 2019 – according to a new report out of the UK.

Autocar claims the body style for the Korean small car will be offered in top-shelf GT guise, after spotting a camouflaged prototype during cold weather testing wearing big wheels and brakes, along with a sporty bodykit.

The report quotes Artur Martins, Kia's European marketing boss, confirming that Albert Biermann is leading the development of the Ceed GT, though it won't be as potent as the Hyundai i30 N.

"With Albert's involvement, you will see similar handling and balance, although not at that level [of performance],” Martins told the British publication.

"It will be more fun than the old car, but it won't be as focused as the i30 N."

While Autocar speculates the Ceed GT will get a "detuned" version of the 2.0-litre turbo four currently fitted in both versions of the i30 N, we're guessing all versions of the Ceed GT – including the Proceed Shooting Brake for that matter – will feature the 150kW/265Nm 1.6-litre turbo petrol that powers the i30 SR locally.

That powertrain is also set to live under the bonnet of the Australian-market Cerato GT sedan and hatch either later this year or early next. Available transmissions should be a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, sending drive to the front wheels.

Revealed at last year's Frankfurt motor show, the Kia Proceed concept previewed the look of the new-generation Ceed (formerly Cee'd) hatchback and wagon launched at the Geneva motor show in March.

However, Autocar's report indicates we could be seeing a version of the sexy shooting brake concept make it to production – though it'll be very watered down in terms of its design.
