2019 Audi SQ8 spied without disguise

New performance SUV struts its stuff sans camouflage in latest images.

The upcoming Audi SQ8 has been spied completely devoid of camouflage, ahead of a likely official reveal later this year.

Spotted in Europe, this white prototype looks pretty similar to standard Q8 variants, with the exception of the quad-tipped exhaust down the back.

Behind the large alloy wheels we can also see brakes wearing the Audi Sport badge – another subtle hint at this vehicle's added performance potential.

What we're unsure about is what will power the SQ8. The original Q8 concept featured a petrol-electric hybrid system pairing a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine with a 17.9kWh battery pack and electric motor, claiming outputs of 330kW and 700Nm.

Audi claimed the concept could sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds, hit a top whack of 250km/h, and return 2.3L/100km on the combined cycle. Considering the brand's new focus on electrification, such a powertrain wouldn't be so far-fetched.

However, the SQ8 could also be launched with the 4.0-litre twin-turbo diesel V8 already doing service in the related SQ7 and Bentley Bentayga Diesel, which claims outputs of 320kW and 900Nm.

The beefy diesel with electric turbocharging should see the SQ8 hit triple figures in under 5.0 seconds (the family-friendly SQ7 claims 4.8 seconds) while consuming less than 8.0L/100km on the combined cycle.

In terms of features and technology, we'd expect the SQ8 to be kitted out with an array of comfort and convenience features normally optional on lower-spec models – though there will still be plenty of cost options – including the availability of four-wheel steering and Audi's latest and greatest driver assistance systems.

Timing is also to be confirmed, though it's expected the SQ8 will make its debut either later this year or early next, potentially at the Paris motor show in October.

Following the launch of the SQ8, the range should be completed with the RS Q8 flagship, sharing its powertrain and running gear with the related Lamborghini Urus. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest, and head to the galleries section for more images.
