2018 Bentley Bentayga Pikes Peak Edition revealed

Green SUV commemorates record-breaking run at the legendary Colorado hillclimb.

Bentley has toppled the production SUV record at the 2018 Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, and will celebrate the feat with a run of 10 special editions.

It was a good weekend to be chasing records in Colorado. Volkswagen set a new overall course record in the all-electric I.D. R, and Rhys Millen hustled a lightly modified Bentayga up the 156 corners of Pikes Peak in 10:49.9 – a handy 1:45.71 quicker than the last Production SUV-class record, set by a Range Rover Sport in 2014.

Although the twin-turbo W12 engine was unchanged from stock, there were a few minor tweaks to the record-breaking car. A full roll-cage, race fire-suppression tech and proper harnesses were all added to the mix, while the 447kW/900Nm W12 was fitted with a unique Akrapovic exhaust.

To make room for the safety kit, Bentley says it ripped around 270kg worth of interior trim out of the car. There's no word on how much it added back in with the roll cage and fire-suppression system, but we'd wager the Pikes Peak record breaker was usefully lighter than stock. Given the margin over the previous record, we'd also wager the extra mass wouldn't have cost Bentley the record.

Beyond that, the air suspension, 48V anti-roll system and Pirelli tyres came straight from the production car. Speaking of production cars, Bentley is celebrating its Pikes Peak triumph with a run of 10 special-edition Bentayga Pikes Peak Editions, outfitted to look like the hillclimb-ready athlete from the weekend.

The exterior can be finished in a choice of Beluga black or the eye-catching Radium pictured here, while the car rides on two-tone 22-inch wheels. All exterior chrome has been swapped for gloss black as part of the exterior black pack, and there's a 'subtle' Pikes Peak graphic on the front fenders.

Behind the wheel, there are Key Lime accents in the door, seats and dash, contrasting with Beluga leather. The wheel and gear lever are trimmed in Alcantara, and there's a Pikes Peak logo on the dashboard trim piece, lest you forget the inspiration for this special edition.

Mechanical specifications mirror those of the record-breaker, which means the car has an active 48V anti-roll system, air suspension and the Bentayga Sports Exhaust as standard. It also comes with the Touring Package, which adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, lane-keeping assist and night vision to the base car. That's right, you usually need to pay more for that stuff.

Just 10 Pikes Peak Edition cars will be made, and they're earmarked for the UK and USA, so don't expect to see one on the road in Australia anytime soon. With that said, we've contacted Bentley Australia on the off chance one is making its way to our shores. Stay tuned for an update.
