Configurator Challenge: Ford GT

Which all-American supercar catches your eye?

Customisation is in vogue at the moment, but choice can be seriously confusing. In our configurator challenge, we let the CarAdvice team loose on a manufacturer’s website to create their ideal spec of a certain model.

For this edition of the Configurator Challenge, we’re designing our perfect Ford GT.

Let us know what you think in the comments, and which cars you’d like to see next!

James Wong, Journalist

I'm a lover of all things Ford GT – one of my earliest car memories is driving the Ford GT90 concept on Need For Speed 2 on my old PC – and the third-generation is a great example of old-meets-new in terms of both styling and technology.

For the exterior I've gone for Liquid Blue paint with Ingot Silver stripes, accented by Graphite 20-inch one-piece forged alloys with black lug nuts.

Popping out behind those lightweight wheels are red brake calipers – I tossed up red and blue for a while, and decided to go with the more 'extra' option. For the front, rear and side trim highlights, I went for gloss carbon-fibre – matte-carbon is for plebs.

Inside, I've gone for the Light Speed colour scheme. The navy trim accents give a nice contrast to the otherwise black appointments, and go well with the blue exterior paint.

Go ahead, tell me you don't love it. I'll wait...

Kez Casey, Road Tester

Many a high school visual communications assignment was devoted to slathering a range of industrial design projects in Gulf blue and orange, inspired by the famous livery of the original GT40.

It breaks my heart then to find that there’s no commensurate colour scheme for the new GT. That’s okay though because I think I’ve found something better: Liquid grey exterior complemented by Competition Orange stripes and gloss carbon elements… This is it!

Nestled over a set of graphite-coloured wheels (with titanium nuts, because you can pick the colour of those too) the Liquid Grey looks purely menacing and helps drive attention towards the orange calipers tied to the stripe package.

Configuring the interior was much, much harder. White accents look fantastic, but the orange theme, called Launch Control, was just too good to resist.

There’s no accounting for the lack of knock-off race wheels, or the missing eyeletted seat trim, but when you look at the latest GT against the mid-00’s version, and the massive leap forward in both presentation and performance (475kW and 745Nm from a 3.5-litre V6) how could you stay mad?

Mike Costello, Senior Editor

So I’ve fitted some Geelong-made 20-inch carbon-fibre wheels. There are also blue calipers, lots of glossy carbon-fibre lower down on the body, and Frozen White paint with signature Lighting Blue stripes.

The interior design is called Light Speed.

We've contacted Mike Costello for further comments, and are awaiting a response...

Here is my Ford GT configuration. Starting on the outside, I've lacquered this beast in Frozen White paint with Competition Orange stripes.

The 20-inch gloss-black forged aluminium wheels (with black lug nuts) complete the package along with the orange calipers. Oooft!

Stepping into the interior, I've chosen the "Launch Control" option which includes an ebony and orange leather-wrapped seats, gorgeous instrument panel, gloss carbon trimmings and Alcantara wrapped steering wheel.

This car really doesn't do a lot for me, although we have had some good times together in Gran Turismo. With the approximate price of a Ford GT, I would just be happier in my GT2 RS.

Scott Collie, Journalist

Yes. Please. I was in Detroit when the GT was rolled out and, well, I've never seen a room – or ice hockey stadium, in this case – full of journalists react like that. It's been a few years since the unveil, but the GT is still one of the most arresting, audacious pieces of design going around.

I'd originally planned to go for blue with silver stripes, but James Wong locked that one down before I could submit my response. There are no rules against double-ups, but I've criticised his taste enough that sharing a design would be a bit embarrassing.

Silver with blue stripes it was, then. Gloss carbon fibre for the exterior highlights, and gloss carbon fibre wheels from Carbon Revolution in Geelong made sense. Support local business, jobs and growth, all of that.

Inside, I've gone for Launch Control – orange and black trim, in English. Looks good, right?

Adam 'AK' Morris, Presenter

What. A. Car.

The previous Ford GT didn't really grab me and when it comes to Le Mans classics, I've always been a Porsche kinda guy so even the GT40's of different incarnations were never my go-to race car, blasphemous I know.

But then this thing was released. Wow. Just wow. Love it.

After very nearly selecting White with the Blue stripes, I've gone with the classic Ford Liquid Blue with Black stripes. It's classy, very 'Ford', and accentuates the incredible body work of the car.

The black carbon-fibre with black lug-nutted 20-inch forged rims aren't too showy to distract from the paint and the gloss-carbon accents just throw in a few lovely design highlights.

Inside Ford call it "Light Speed", but I'll call it black with dark blue bits. The blue works nicely with the exterior and the black matches the tyres.

But let's be honest, no matter what colour or combination this thing comes in, it looks incredible.

Rob Margeit, Culture and Lifestyle Editor

Love the original GT40 (who doesn't?) and I like the idea of harking back to the first Le Mans winner in 1966. That's why I've gone for Shadow Black exterior with Ingot Silver stripes.

The rims are 20-inch carbon-fibre finished in gloss black, and to add a splash of colour, I've ticked the box for orange brake calipers.

That orange theme continues through to the interior where trim orange accents add a bit of pop.

Now, if only the GT could jet its way Down Under. Over to you, FoMoCo.
