Polestar 1: Carbon-fibre construction detailed

Swedish performance brand Polestar has released new details about its upcoming 1 hybrid sports car, this time regarding the new model's extensive use of lightweight carbon-fibre in its construction.

The company says the use of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) for most body parts contributes to a weight saving of 230 kilograms.

Carbon-fibre components include the bonnet, bootlid, side panels, doors, and the entire roof structure. Additionally, the 'dragonfly' component sitting between the middle of the floor and the rear construction is also made out of CFRP.

"When you combine this strengthened framework with the super-strong body and roof structure, you get a stiff and communicative chassis which translates driver input into superb driving characteristics," said Christian Samson, head of product creation at Polestar.

Other benefits include extra strength when compared to steel, along with a sleeker profile.

The Polestar 1's panoramic roof features a glass panel that stretching its length and width, thanks in part to the thinner CFRP structural components, contributing to a "truly panoramic view".

Revealed in October last year, the Polestar 1 is powered by a beefed-up version of Volvo's T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, teaming a twin-charged 2.0-litre petrol engine with two electric motors.

System outputs are rated at 441kW (600hp) and 1000Nm, channeled to the ground via all four wheels – the combustion engine drives the front axle while the electric motors turn the rear.

The company is projecting a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of 'less than four seconds', with pricing likely to start at around €130,000 ($203,464) – not that the Australian price is relevant, given it's only going to be made in left-hand drive.

Meanwhile, the 1's two 34kWh battery packs allow for a claimed electric range of up to 150km.

Polestar has confirmed the 1 will make its 'dynamic debut' at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which runs July 12-15. At the festival, prototype #004 will 'charge' up the famous hillclimb – yes, pun intended.

Following the British event, the Polestar 1 will make its North American debut at Monterey Car Week in California on August 23-26.
