2019 Audi A1 officially unveiled, here in 2019

All-new hatchback has more space, more tech and more customisation options

Audi has released new official details about the second-generation A1 Sportback, set to arrive in Australia during the first half of 2019.

The A1 has grown 56mm longer than the outgoing model (4.03m), but its width is "almost the same" at 1.74m.  Audi claims the A1 Sportback's boot is 65L more accommodating than before at 335L, which expands to 1090L with the second row seats folded, thanks to the bigger footprint.

All versions of the new A1 Sportback will be fitted with the company's new 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument binnacle, complemented by a multifunction steering wheel. There are two versions available: the standard one, and an optional one with "an extended range of functions".

A central MMI Navigation Plus display measuring 10.1 inches is available, offering features like hybrid route guidance, satellite map views and new 3D city models. The new display also offers touch inputs and voice recognition, and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Qi wireless charging is also available, as is a 560W 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. A sound system of unconfirmed wattage and speaker count is the standard audio option, however.

New details regarding the A1's driver assistance suite have been revealed, too. Standard lane-departure warning will notify if the driver is drifting from their lane at speeds of 65km/h and up, while the new 'pre sense front' (autonomous emergency braking) and adaptive cruise control operate from 0-200km/h in S tronic dual-clutch automatic cars.

In addition to the rear-view camera, the new A1 also offers a park assist system that can perform parallel and horizontal parking manoeuvres, along with forward perpendicular parks.

Three equipment lines will be offered: basic, advanced, and S line. Each can be customised with a range of exterior and interior packages, along with contrasting body and roof colours, so buyers have a wide range of options to make their A1 unique.

As previously reported, there are 10 exterior finishes on offer, with the roof, mirrors, side front spoiler lips and side sills all available in contrasting colours.

At launch there will also be an 'Edition' model, based on the S line equipment grade. Headlining features include 18-inch alloys finished in bronze/white/black depending on the body colour, Audi rings in 'foil' or rim colour on the sides, dark-tinted LED headlights and tail-lights, along with black Audi badging at the front and rear.

Inside, there's an optional 'contour and ambient lighting package' which involves LED light elements that can be configured in 30 different colours, which Audi says "brings the interior design to life".

Three engines have been detailed in overseas materials, but we're yet to confirm the engine line-up for Australia. The base 1.0-litre turbo makes 70kW, while the top-spec 2.0-litre four-cylinder puts out 147kW.

If you haven't already guessed, both engines feature in the Volkswagen Polo range, with the latter the same unit found in the GTI hot hatch.

Higher-spec engines are available with the 'Performance' dynamic package, involving red brake calipers and larger discs, along with adjustable dampers, a sound actuator and Audi drive select with adjustable modes, while a 'Basis' package for the entry-level petrol car includes sports suspension, larger brake discs and red calipers.

Alloy wheels are available in a range of designs measuring 15- to 18-inches, and the A1 will be available optionally with hill hold assist.

Australia

Audi's local division has confirmed the new A1 will be lobbing Down Under in the first half of 2019, with final pricing and specifications to be revealed closer to launch.
