Honda Civic Type R topples front-drive Spa record

Next stop Silverstone for Japanese hot-hatch

The 2018 Honda Civic Type R has claimed another lap record as part of its 'Type R Challenge 2018', setting a new standard for front-wheel drive vehicles around Spa Francorchamps.

Having last month toppled the front-drive record at the Magny-Cours GP circuit, Honda inserted Bertrand Baguette – ex-LMP2 and current NSX GT driver – into the Type R for a tilt at Spa.

As if to prove these records aren't all that relevant, the previous fastest lap around the legendary Belgian circuit belonged to Rob Huff and his FK2 Civic Type R.

Where Huff managed a 2:56.910 in 2016, Baguette and the 'FK8' Type R lapped in 2:53.720, shaving 3.29 seconds from the previous record. For reference, Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes-Benz W08 owns the overall lap record (1:42.55).

Now it's conquered Spa, the Type R will take on Silverstone, the Hungaroring and Estoril to complete its record-attempting tour.
