2019 Suzuki Jimny revealed on global corporate site

New baby off-roader to be fully detailed next month

The all-new Suzuki Jimny has been revealed on the company's global and Japanese websites, ahead of a full launch in July.

In terms of design, there's no real surprises here considering we've seen the final look on several occasions through spy images and leaks in the Japanese media.

Details for international models are scarce at the moment, but we do know the Jimny will be offered in two bodies in the Japanese domestic market – the standard 'Jimny' and the 'Jimny Sierra'.

As expected, the Jimny for Japan looks to be a 'kei' car, featuring a 660cc engine, though all models come with four-wheel drive as standard. Meanwhile, the higher-spec Jimny Sierra gets a larger 1.5-litre engine, along with chunkier bumpers and wheel arches in terms of aesthetic differences.

Both versions come with the choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission – before you go ham in the comments, we're guessing export markets will get different drivetrains, though time will tell.

Available equipment includes LED headlights, alloy wheels (16-inch Jimny, 15-inch Jimny Sierra), air-conditioning, push-button start, cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection (5-100km/h vehicles, 5-60km/h pedestrians).

Going by the sole interior image, the company's 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be offered, too, as will selectable four-wheel drive and a multifunction steering wheel.

Suzuki's global website also confirms the new Jimny is based on a ladder-frame chassis with three-link rigid axle suspension, while the four-wheel drive system is part-time and features a low-range transfer gear.

Further details will be revealed at the Jimny's official launch, which according to the Japanese website is scheduled for sometime in July.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, Michael Pachota, managing director for Suzuki's local arm, said: "We can still not confirm whether New Jimny will be available for the Australian market".

"However, we are hopeful, with Suzuki Motor Corporation's recent reveal, our request for this vehicle will be confirmed soon" he added.
