Porsche celebrates 70 years – video

A slick look at the brand's history

In case you missed our podcast, the 911 Speedster reveal, and Taycan name announcement last week, Porsche is celebrating 70 years since its first car, the 356 Roadster, was registered.

To celebrate, the brand has put together a brief video celebrating its history, and reiterating what it's all about. There's the usual mix of sharp cuts, dramatic music and deep-voiced narration in there, but it's also an excellent snapshot of why motoring enthusiasts love Porsche so much.

As for the cars we mentioned in the opener, well, the 911 Speedster is a nod to classic Porsches, based on the Carrera 4 Cabriolet. Instead of a heavy folding roof and regular windscreen, it gets a sharply-raked windsc0reen and double-bubble, Speedster-style rear tonneau cover flowing out the back of the head rests.

There's plenty of '70' decals, badges and logos, too. It's just a concept at the moment, but a decision on production is reportedly imminent.

Where the Speedster is unabashedly retro, the Taycan is a nod to the future of Porsche. Forget about Mission E, the name apparently translates roughly to "lively young horse" as a nod to the "leaping horse" on the brand's badge.
