2019 Skoda Kodiaq RS: Bi-turbo diesel confirmed, unlikely for Australia – UPDATE

Initial details about hot crossover revealed, sets seven-seat Nurburgring record

UPDATE (15/6/18): Skoda Australia has issued comments regarding the local availability of the Kodiaq RS. See bottom of article for details

Further details about the Skoda Kodiaq RS have dripped out ahead of the car's debut later this year.

The Kodiaq RS, in the hands of Sabine Schmitz, completed a lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 9 minutes 29.84 seconds. Skoda claims the Kodiaq RS now has the record for the fastest lap by a seven-seat SUV.

Skoda claims the vehicle piloted by Schmitz had "no special engineering ahead of its record attempt", and is "precisely the same version that will be unveiled to the public in October".

Under the bonnet, the Kodiaq RS features the Volkswagen Group's 2.0-litre twin-turbo BiTDI engine, and has 176kW of power on tap. This engine is already used in the top-of-the-line Volkswagen Passat and related Tiguan in Europe, and in that car it generates 500Nm of torque.

Full details about the car have to be released, but we know it will include all-wheel drive, adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control, various selectable driving modes, and Dynamic Sound Boost functionality.

The Skoda Kodiaq RS will make its official public debut at the 2018 Paris motor show, which takes place in October.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, Paul Pottinger, communications boss for Skoda's local division, said the Kodiaq RS is an unlikely starter for Australia – at least for the time being – as the 176TDI is currently not available for 'hot climate' regions like Australia.

However, Pottinger noted that the Australian arm of the Volkswagen Group is "actively addressing" our region's 'hot climate' designation, which is also responsible for locally-bound Volkswagen Golf R models being detuned compared to their European equivalents.

When asked if the Kodiaq RS will be offered with a second powertrain, such as the 206TSI petrol available in the Superb, Pottinger said it's "unlikely" for such a "specialised vehicle" to be offered with two engine options.
