Lamborghini & Ferrari at Motor Show

While Mini, Fiat, Citroen, Alfa Romeo and Jaguar have all abandoned next month's Australian International Motor Show, the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini have delighted car fans by announcing their appearance.

The competing Italian brands will battle it out at the show with the Ferrari 430 Scuderia making its Asia-Pacific debut, while the raging bull fights back with the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera (Italian for "superlight").

The new Ferrari made its worldwide debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, let's first watch this official video on the 430 Scuderia.

Ferrari is hotting up its current best seller, the F430. Compared to the standard F430, the Scuderia has 15 kilowatts more power, 100 kilograms less weight and better aerodynamics (10 per cent more down force), in addition to a raft of electronic chassis controls derived from Formula One technology.

One such electronic chassis control is the new E-differential, which is now fully integrated with the electronic stability control (ESC) system for the first time, while the ESC has been separated from traction control for individual driver selection.

All of that equals to a 0-100km/h time of just 3.6 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 320km/h. Ferrari also says the Scuderia will lap the company's test track (Fiorano) in identical time to the god-like Ferrari Enzo.

It seems a little convenient that both cars lap in the exact same time, rumours floating around the net suggest the Scuderia is actually faster than the five year old Enzo! And it's not hard to see why, the 430 Scuderia's sequential manual gearbox now takes only 60 milliseconds to change gears, compared to 100 milliseconds for the F599 and 150 for the Enzo.

Part of the 100kg weight loss diet is a result of new composite material called RTM employed for the bumpers and sills.

Not to be outdone, Ferrari's nemesis has fired back with the Lamborghini Gallardo (Gay-ar-do) Superleggera, and like two competing cat-walk models, the Superleggera has also lost 100 kilograms over the standard Gallardo.

Instead of using RTM, the Lambo gets away with more and more carbon fibre through out the bodywork (rear diffuser and underbody covering, rearview mirrors, door panels and the central tunnel's covering) while replacing certain glass surfaces with transparent polycarbonate, including the engine cover.

So what lurks under the new polycarbonate engine cover? The German made 5.0-litre V10 engine. This wouldn't be a fair fight if Lamborghini hadn't increased the power, but they have, with an additional 8kW, raising the total to 390kW.

It is 0.2 of second slower than the Ferrari with a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds, but it makes up for that in the looks department.
What ever you do, don't miss out on this years International Motorshow. The event will be held from the 11th to the 21st of October at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Drive, Darling Harbour.
