Byton K-Byte concept revealed

The news comes after more funding was announced for the electric startup

Just 24 hours after announcing it had raised US$500 million in a funding push, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Byton has revealed its second concept car.

The K-Byte follows on from the M-Byte SUV revealed at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, incorporating Level 4 autonomy into an interesting, luxurious package. It relies on autonomous tech from Aurora, the brand's partner organisation, and is therefore capable of driving without any human input under some circumstances.

Up front, the car is capable of changing its 3D graphics display based on its surroundings, while there are slimline tail-lights and a curvaceous shape down back. The cab-backward profile and sloping roofline are becoming more popular, as designers look for new ways to excite buyers with different body styles.

There's no official word on how much power the K-Byte will have, but Byton says the car will share its platform with the M-Byte. That car was shown off with two configurations: a single-motor 71kWh setup good for 400km of driving, and a dual-motor 95kWh setup offering 520km of range.

As a concept from a startup, there's no guarantee those figures will appear in real life, but they'd make for a competitive EV in the current climate.

The news of the K-Byte comes a day after Byton announced US$500 million ($660,300,000) of funding from investors. With a research and development centre opening in Nanjing, China, and a batch of prototype cars rolling out in 2019, the company appears to be tracking neatly from startup to viable production business.

"As a world leader in smart mobility, we aim to build BYTON into a global premium brand with 'China Root, Global Reach' as the core of our development strategy," said Dr. Carsten Breitfeld, CEO and co-founder, Byton.

"By combining our expertise in R&D and traditional car-making with innovative Internet technologies, we aspire to pioneer a smart mobility revolution."
