Take a trip through the CarAdvice archives

People often say “don’t forget where you came from”. Although we’re focused on every new car, every last detail here at CarAdvice, we have an extensive back-catalogue of news stories, lifestyle yarns and reviews.

Here’s a look at what happened on the week of June 12 in years past.

12 June 2017: Porsche 911 GT2 RS revealed at E3

It's already been a whole trip around the sun since Porsche revealed its manic 911 GT2 RS and the Electronic Entertainment Expo, also known as E3.

While the event is normally used to showcase upcoming video games, the GT2 RS took centre stage as the hero car for Forza Motorsport 7, one of the leading titles for the Xbox One X console.

Full specifications weren't released until the Goodwood Festival of Speed a month later, but we got a good early snapshot at the initial reveal.

12 June 2015: Ford Ranger pricing and specs

With the updated Ford Ranger line-up just months away, it's worth remembering that the current PXII ute range was initially detailed three years ago today.

Some 24 variants made up the revised line-up, bringing a fresh look, interior upgrades, and the availability of several advanced driver assistance technologies that were largely unheard of in the ute segment at the time.

12 June 2013: Holden Malibu arrives from $28,490

Remember the Holden Malibu? If the name doesn't ring a bell, it was essentially a rebadged Chevrolet front-wheel drive sedan that slotted below the Commodore.

Under the skin it had a lot in common with the Opel Insignia at the time and the Saab 9-5, and offered the choice of a four-cylinder petrol or four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

Compared to the US-spec version, the Australian-market Malibu got a unique look, its own suspension tune developed by Holden's engineers, and was sourced from South Korea.

12 June 2012: Mahindra XUV500 gets four-star ANCAP rating

India's first attempt at the Australian passenger car market received a four-star safety result when it launched in 2012, matching mainstream models like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Mini Countryman.

While the four-star rating was a decent effort for the time, ANCAP noted some disappointing findings in individual tests – including the "lost structural integrity" of the passenger compartment in the front test, and there was also risk of a serious leg injury due to to "excessive rearward movement of the brake pedal".

12 June 2008: Ford Focus RS official teaser

The third-generation Ford Focus RS is already out of production, but on this day 10 years ago we were given a teaser for its predecessor, and what a car it was.

Equipped with an uprated version of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo used in the XR5 Turbo (ST) of the time, the second-gen Focus RS made an impressive 206kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

All that grunt was channelled exclusively to the front wheels via a six-speed manual. The Blue Oval's hottest hatch was also equipped with a semi-active limited-slip differential, along with upgraded springs, dampers and anti-roll bars.

It eventually came to Australia in limited numbers, though we'll save that story for another Time Machine Tuesday.
