2019 Mazda MX-5 to get more powerful engine, not confirmed for Australia

And a telescopic steering wheel, in news to warm the hearts of tall people everywhere

The updated Mazda MX-5 has been unveiled in Japan, where it has gained a more powerful 2.0-litre engine and a telescoping steering wheel among other changes.

The MX-5's 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine has been massaged to deliver 137kW, up from 118kW. The redline has also been raised from 6800rpm to 7500rpm, and torque increased slightly from 200Nm to 205Nm.

According to Mazda, the company has reduced the weight of rotating parts, minimised intake and exhaust losses, shortened the combustion period, and improved fuel economy.

Mazda also has revised the silencer setup to improve the engine's note, and ensure "feedback of the sound linked to the accelerator operation is more intensely felt, and you can enjoy a sense of unity with the vehicle".

For the Japanese market, other updates include a new telescopic steering wheel, traffic sign recognition, driver attention alerts, and the standard fitment of the i-ActiveSense safety suite.

New options include gloss black wing mirror covers, gunmetal grey or black wheels, and a new caramel-colour soft-top.

Australia

The updated MX-5 goes on sale in Japan from July 26. Mazda hasn't confirmed whether the telescoping steering rack and more powerful engine will be offered locally, and hopes to know more "in the coming months". Our fingers are firmly crossed.
