Big emissions cuts are on the cards

Nissan has announced its first-ever sustainability plan as part of its M.O.V.E. to 2022 program, with the goal of decreasing its CO2 emissions from new cars by 40 per cent before 2022 compared to levels in 2000.

According to the company, this is the first time it has created a 'comprehensive' sustainability plan, designed to unify its 'environmental, social and governance' initiatives. It's based on the Nissan Green Program, launched in 2001 with an eye on 2050.

Central to the plan are the following goals:

  • Decreasing CO2 emissions from new cars by 40 per cent by 2022, compared to 2000 emission levels.
  • One million electric or electrified vehicle sales per annum by 2022
  • Decreasing CO2 emissions from corporate operations by 30 per cent by 2022, compared to 2005 levels
  • Reducing the use of new materials to 70 per cent by 2022
  • Reducing the amount of water intake per vehicle built by 21 per cent for 2022, compared with 2010 levels

“Nissan Sustainability 2022 is fully aligned with our midterm objectives of delivering steady growth and leading the automotive industry’s technology evolution,” said Hitoshi Kawaguchi, Nissan senior vice president and chief sustainability officer.

“We believe sustainable mobility will help achieve a world with zero emissions and zero fatalities. Our plan, further enhanced by our efforts to be a truly diverse and inclusive company, will make an important contribution to that effort.”

Along with its sustainability plan, Nissan has recently released plans for its electrified, autonomous and connected vehicles earlier this year. Expect to see eight electric vehicles in the next four years, including a kei car for the Japanese market and an IMx-based crossover. Every new Infiniti from 2021 will be electrified, too.

By the end of the program, Nissan wants electrified cars to account for 40 per cent of Japanese and European sales, stretching to 50 per cent by 2025. In the USA, the expectation is 20-30 per cent by 2025, while it's 35-40 per cent by the same mark for China.
