2018 Ford Shelby Mustang Super Snake unveiled
And it's packing a whopping 800hp V8
The tease is over, and the 2018 Ford Shelby Super Snake has been revealed in the USA, packing a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 making up to 597kW (800hp) of power.
That's right, 597kW, good for a 60mph (97km/h) run of just 3.5 seconds. If that's a bit much snake for you to handle, there's also a 710hp (529kW) tune available, although we'd question the logic of buying a high-end muscle car and not optioning the most powerful engine.
Under the skin, Shelby has reworked the standard 'Stang's suspension and brakes, and added the option for a track-ready setup from the racing gurus at Penske. The 'base' package is made up of six-piston front brake calipers and four-piston rears, along with 20-inch forged aluminium wheels.
There are plenty of exterior add-ons to separate the Super Snake from more mundane Mustang offerings, with a new bonnet, side skirts, rear bumper and diffuser, along with a bolt-on spoiler and tinted windows. You'll also notice the stripe package and wide-body kit on the car pictured below.
The wide-body kit actually adds four inches (10cm) to the car's rear end, for a seriously broad stance. While the stripes and body-kit look great, both are optional.
Behind the wheel you get unique badging on the dashboard, contrast stitching on the seats, new plates on the door sills and specially-designed floor mats. It's the small things, right?
Pricing will start at US$113,445 ($148,600), including the base donor car to which modifications are applied. A limited number will be built, and each will be noted in an official Shelby registry to prevent knock-offs popping up on the used market.
