2019 BMW Z4 nears production

Slinky Supra development partner preparing for the real world

BMW is getting ready to unveil its Toyota Supra twin, the third-generation Z4, teasing the drop-top sports car during suspension testing in France.

The latest set of images still have the car covered in camouflage – boo – but BMW has revealed a few details about its replacement for the hard-topped, boulevard-cruiser the new Z4 will replace.

Power in the Z4 M40i comes from a turbocharged inline six engine, and the car rides on a lowered sports suspension with electrically-adjustable dampers. BMW says it has a new front axle, M Sport brakes, an electrically-controlled rear differential and lightweight alloy wheels as well, suggesting the M40i will be set up as a proper sports car.

There's no word on how much power the "extremely powerful" engine in the M40i will make, but the most recent car to be badged M40i, the X3 SUV, makes 265kW and 500Nm. It hits 100km/h in 4.8 seconds which, given it's a high-riding soft roader, is likely slower than the Z4 will offer.

"The vehicle concept of the new BMW Z4 is geared consistently towards agility and driving dynamics," said Jos van As, head of suspension tuning at BMW.

"The high level of body stiffness and the very rigid suspension attachment provide the perfect basis for a set-up that guarantees the performance qualities of a genuine sports car in terms of steering precision as well as longitudinal and transverse acceleration."

The Z4 will likely make its debut later this year, potentially at the Paris motor show. Stay tuned for all the latest.
