Limited-run drop-top will be part of June drive-away deals
Fiat Australia has decided it's time to celebrate Carlo Abarth, the man behind the Abarth name and scorpion badge, with a limited-run version of the 124 Spider.
Dubbed the 124 Spider Monza Special Edition, just 30 examples of the limited-run drop-top will be brought to Australia, priced in June from $46,950 drive-away in manual guise, or $48,950 drive-away with an automatic.
Once the drive-away offer ends, and provided there are cars remaining, the Monza will cost $47,850 before on-roads with a stick or $49,850 with a self-shifter.
Fiat will only offer the car in in white, red and black to celebrate past victories in the European Rally Championships. Trainspotters will notice gloss-red mirror covers on the outside, along with auto-levelling LED headlamps and LED daytime running lights as part of the visibility package.
Also included in that package are parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Other standard equipment includes a Record Monza exhaust system, designed to deliver a "powerful and hard-hitting sound" through its four pipes. A mechanical valve keeps things quiet at low speed, before opening up as the revs rise.
Behind the wheel, there are two-tone red-and-black leather seats with embroidered headrests and limited-edition build plates, lest you forget what you're driving. Along with a build number, the brushed-aluminium plate features a laser-etched map of the Monza circuit.
All of this is in honour, as we mentioned earlier, of Carlo Abarth. Along with his work founding the Abarth company, he was a racer and long-haul speed-record chaser. Among other crowns, he took the 24-hour record around Monza in 1956, averaging 155km/h over 3743km behind the wheel of a Fiat Abarth 750.
"The legacy of Carlo Abarth has driven the production of some of the world’s most exciting motor vehicles and this Monza Special Edition continues the realisation of his passion," said Fulvio Antonelli, Abarth brand director in Australia.
"Equally at home on urban roads as well as on race tracks, the Abarth 124 spider is attracting a new generation of enthusiasts in Australia with its performance, technology, comfort and ease of driving. It combines the authentic roadster experience with exemplary performance, technology, safety and distinctive Italian design."
