2019 Mazda CX-3 launches in Japan with new 1.8L diesel

The facelifted 2019 Mazda CX-3 range has launched in the company's home market of Japan, hinting at what's to expect from the updated crossover when it arrives in Australian showrooms later this year.

Headlining the upgrades are a new 1.8-litre turbo diesel, new active safety equipment, and more upmarket trimmings and finishes throughout the cabin.

Firstly, the new engine option replaces the pre-facelift range's 1.5-litre oiler. Outputs for Japan are rated at 85kW of power at 4000rpm, and 270Nm of torque from 1600 to 2600rpm – that's up 8kW on the old motor, while peak torque is available for an additional 100rpm.

Both the new diesel and revised 2.0-litre petrol engine (which gets a 1kW power bump) meet new Euro 6d-temp emission standards, including the real-drive emission test (RDE).

In addition to the upgrades detailed at the New York motor show – which include LED tail-lights, revised alloy wheels, and a redesigned centre console with armrest and electronic park brake – the Japanese-market version also gets the latest version of Mazda's autonomous emergency braking system, which can now detect pedestrians at night time.

The upgraded safety suite also includes the availability of adaptive cruise control with stop&go for the first time, along with an auto-dimming rear-view mirror for enhanced visibility.

Finally, there's a special launch model in the Japanese range which features 'deep red' nappa leather upholstery (pictured) with contrasting white leatherette highlights. The trim around the centre tunnel also gets a leatherette trim in certain grades.

Mazda's local division was unable to confirm whether the Australian CX-3 updates will mirror that of the Japanese range.

We do know, however, that the 2019 CX-3 line-up is scheduled to launch Down Under in late-2018. Stay tuned for more updates in the lead-up to the local launch.
