Audi Q5 3.0 TDI: V6 diesel on sale from $83,900

First deliveries of new variant to arrive in September

Audi has announced pricing and specifications for the new Q5 3.0 TDI, the first non-performance six-cylinder version of the company's mid-size SUV.

Kicking off at $83,900 before on-road costs, the new model is $1000 more affordable than the BMW X3 xDrive30d, and a significant $7200 less than the Mercedes-Benz GLC350d. It's also more than $10,000 more expensive than the Q5 2.0 TFSI quattro ($73,211).

Power comes from a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel shared with the larger Q7, though in the Q5 it makes a slightly peppier 210kW of power and 620Nm of torque – up 10kW and 20Nm – and is mated as standard to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Maximum torque is available from just 1500rpm, and Audi claims the 3.0 TDI will sprint from 0-100km/h in a hot-hatch-beating 5.8 seconds, while sipping fuel at a claimed rate of 6.3L/100km on the combined ADR cycle.

Quattro all-wheel drive is also standard fit, naturally, with a front-to-rear torque distribution of 40:60 – mmm, sporty. There's a mechanical centre differential, too.

In terms of standard equipment, the top-shelf Q5 comes with Audi's 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit driver's display, an 8.3-inch MMI navigation plus system with MMI touch controller, DVD player, five included map updates, live traffic information, 4G LTE hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, gesture-controlled electric tailgate, 360-degree camera system, park assist, driver seat memory, and heated front seats.

There's also heated and folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors with memory, an electrically-adjustable steering column, along with a suite of Audi driver assist systems – including autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection (up to 85km/h), exit warning system, cross-traffic assist, blind-spot assist, active lane assist, adaptive cruise control with stop&go including traffic jam assist, turn assist, collision warning up to 250km/h, and high-beam assist just to name a few.

Features carried over from lower grades include 20-inch alloys, adaptive LED headlights, leather-appointed trim, sports front seats, keyless entry and start, tri-zone climate control, steering-mounted paddle shifters, along with a 180W 10-speaker sound system with subwoofer.

The Q5 3.0 TDI is on sale now from $83,900 plus ORCs, with first deliveries scheduled for September.
