Jaguar J-Pace due in 2021 – report
New crossover to be based on Range Rover platform
The Jaguar J-Pace, a new range-topping crossover, is reportedly due to hit the market from 2021.
According to Autocar, the company has made trademark filings for the name across the globe.
Although the new crossover will adopt the 'J' moniker in order to align it with the range-topping XJ sedan, under the skin the J-Pace will share its platform and other key components with the full-size Range Rover.
Indeed, the next-generation XJ is understood to be an all-electric model, and will be launched next year to coincide with the model's 50th birthday.
If the report is correct, the J-Pace will be the brand's fourth crossover vehicle after the F-Pace, smaller E-Pace, and all-electric I-Pace.
The decision to approve another crossover has been spurred by the success of the F-Pace. With over 70,000 sold worldwide last year, it is easily the brand's best selling car, and accounted for nearly half of all Jaguars sold (around 160,000).
Last year, the bulk of Jaguar Land Rover's 600,000 sales came from its array of Land Rover and Range Rover models.
Locally, to end of the April this year, Land Rover and Range Rover (3749 combined) have dwarfed Jaguar (666). The British car maker trails the leading German luxury marques by a significant margin — Mercedes-Benz (11,530), BMW (8172), and Audi (6745) — but is ahead of Lexus (3026).
