BMW iX3 to commence Chinese production in 2020

Company boss also announces joint-venture with Great Wall

The upcoming BMW iX3 electric SUV has been confirmed for production in China from 2020, alongside the combustion-powered version.

During the company's annual general meeting this week, CEO Harald Krüger confirmed BMW will extend its partnership with regional partner Brilliance Auto.

For the Chinese market, the current X3 will be produced in Shenyang from mid-2018, with the all-electric iX3 to join it in 2020.

The standard X3 will continue to be built in the US and South Africa for markets like Australia, though it's unclear where the rest of the world will source their electric SUVs.

Other steps of the planned strategy for China include a new joint venture with Great Wall, "aimed at producing [the] fully-electric Mini vehicles in China".

According to Krüger, the decisions come after the Chinese government announced its intention to reduce tariffs and further open up its car market.

Beyond the borders of China, BMW will open a new facility in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, which will produce vehicles for the "global market" – though the company's boss didn't detail which ones.
