2019 BMW X5 to be revealed later this year

Company CEO makes announcement during AGM

BMW's boss, Harald Krüger, has confirmed the new X5 SUV will debut "later this year" – the first official confirmation of the new model's timing.

Speaking at the 98th Annual General Meeting for BMW AG in Munich, Krüger said "2018 will be our X year", detailing the rollout of the X2, X3, X4, and "a successor to the X5".

We've seen the new X5 out and about a bit recently – albeit heavily camouflaged – in standard trim, along with high-performance X5 M guise.

Krüger's announcement doesn't really add further details as to what to expect from the new-gen version of the company's popular SUV, though we can expect similar upgrades to those seen in the smaller X3 and X4.

Underpinning the next X5 will be a version of the company's CLAR modular architecture, which will eventually serve as the basis to all its core models from 3 Series and above.

Benefits of the new component set include a lighter body – which should contribute to improved efficiency and handling.

The exterior and interior design should follow suit from the X3, incorporated new LED headlights and tail-lights, new steering wheel, digital instruments, and a dashboard layout that closely mirrors the 5 Series and 7 Series.

Expect the latest in BMW's infotainment and driver assistance systems, allowing semi-autonomous driving capabilities – as is the norm amongst Germany's manufacturers right now.

Power will likely come from a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, ranging from four- to eight-cylinders in capacity. A plug-in hybrid iPerformance version will almost certainly become available, too.

The X5 M, meanwhile, should draw power from the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that features in the new M5 – developing 441kW of power and 750Nm in 'standard' trim.

We're expecting the new X5 range to debut at the next major American motor show – given the X5, X6, and soon X7 are all manufactured in Indiana – which would be Los Angeles in December.

However, don't be surprised if BMW pulls the wraps off the new SUV just ahead of the auto show. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest updates.
