Tesla Model X tows Boeing 787 Dreamliner – Video
Avid motoring enthusiasts probably remember Volkswagen towing a Boeing 747 with a diesel V10 Touareg. People saw diesel very differently in 2008, and the 747 was still alive and kicking.
Now, Tesla and Qantas have teamed up for a more up-to-date take on the same stunt.
The tow car in the video is a Model X P100D, and the plane is the latest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, carrying a "small amount of fuel on board" but no passengers.
Although it's rated to tow 2500kg, the Model X managed to pull the 130-tonne airplane nearly 300 metres. That was enough to hand the Tesla the Guinness World Record for 'heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle'.
Why the Tesla and Qantas partnership? Well, there are a few pairings between the two brands – mileage offsets and charging facilities in valet parking, to name a few.
