Nissan to rollout ProPilot tech across more models – UPDATE

Semi-autonomous systems to expand to 20 models and 20 markets by 2022

UPDATE (16/5/18): Nissan Australia has released a statement regarding the local release of the ProPilot technology suite. See bottom of article for details.

Nissan has announced plans to expand the availability of its ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving systems, with the US-market Rogue Sport (Qashqai) next on the list.

ProPilot Assist is essentially a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane assist that "helps drivers stay in their lane, navigate stop-and-go traffic and maintain a set vehicle speed and distance to the vehicle ahead".

According to the company, ProPilot Assist can "potentially help lessen driver fatigue and create a more confident driving experience – especially for drivers who experience heavy highway traffic on a daily basis".

Despite the semi-autonomous capabilities, however, Nissan markets the technology strictly as a hands-on system.

Models already fitted with ProPilot Assist include the Serena MPV in Japan, the Euro-market Qashqai crossover, the Japanese-spec X-Trail along with the US Rogue (X-Trail).

The new Leaf electric vehicle (below) is also available with the technology, while the US-market 2019 Altima sedan will also offer semi-autonomous systems.

Nissan has confirmed the Rogue Sport (Qashqai) sold in the US will be next to get the tech, along with Canada's Qashqai in "late 2018".

Following this year's rollout, the company' plans to expand the availability of ProPilot Assist to 20 models and 20 markets by the end of the 2022 Financial Year, as part of its M.O.V.E to 2022 strategy.

"ProPilot Assist is an iconic technology for Nissan Intelligent Mobility, Nissan's vision of how vehicles are powered, driven and integrated into society," said Philippe Klein, chief planning officer for Nissan.

"Its acceptance by consumers has been beyond expectations, and we're pleased to expand its availability to more popular models such as Altima, X-Trail and Rogue Sport."

Speaking with CarAdvice, Nissan's local communications boss, Karla Leach, said the Australian launch of ProPilot in Australia is "still being confirmed".
