Volkswagen T-Roc R spied again

Hot SUV looks to be well in the works

A development prototype believed to be an early Volkswagen T-Roc R has been spied again, indicating the company's small performance SUV project is still in the works.

Snapped leaving the Volkswagen and Audi test facility at the Nurburgring, the T-Roc R prototype looks very much like the blue example spied last September, though the LED daytime-running light strips in the front bumper aren't present on this black vehicle.

The main point of difference between this vehicle and the standard T-Roc is the set of quad tailpipes out the back, which also hint at the T-Roc R's powertrain – likely to be shared with the Golf R hot hatch.

In European 'cold climate' trim, the 2.0-litre turbo four used in the Golf R and Audi S3 makes 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque. However, the Australian-market versions are detuned to 213kW/380Nm.

Coupled with a seven-speed DSG and all-wheel drive, the little T-Roc R could be quite the straight-line weapon. Expect 0-100km/h to take just under 5.0 seconds.

Other upgrades over the standard model will likely include a larger wheel/tyre package, bigger brakes, and stiffer suspension.

The T-Roc R should also have a lot in common with the upcoming Audi SQ2, which has also been spied in prototype form recently.

It's unclear at this stage when the hot T-Roc will be revealed, but we reckon the Paris motor show in October is a solid bet. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest updates.
