Alfa Romeo Giulia coupe, large SUV coming 2019 – report

Three new body styles reportedly on their way

Two- and four-door 'coupe' versions of the Alfa Romeo Giulia, will reportedly be added to Alfa Romeo's range some time in 2019, along with a large SUV.

According to Autocar, Sergio Marchionne, head of Fiat Chrysler, will announce the new models at an event coinciding with the 14th anniversary of his tenure as the chief of Fiat.

Giulia coupe

The magazine believes the Giulia coupe will be available in the traditional two-door body style, as well as a coupe-style five-door hatch similar to those found in the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5 ranges.

For the Giulia coupe, engineers are reportedly working on an energy recovery system (ERS) similar to the one used by the Ferrari LaFerrari.

Coupled to the Giulia Veloce's 2.0-litre turbo, the ERS setup increases output from 206kW to around 257kW. Paired with the Quadrifoglio's 2.9-litre turbocharged V6, power output jumps from 375kW to an eye-opening 480kW.

Given the need to amortise the cost of developing these drivetrains, they should also appear, in time, under the bonnets of the Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover.

Lower-priced versions of the Giulia coupe will reportedly use drivetrains already used by the Giulia sedan and Stelvio.

Large SUV

While the Giulia coupe will add glitz and glamour to the Alfa Romeo range, it's likely a new large crossover will do more to help the company's sales, as well as its bottom line.

To be based on the rear- and all-wheel drive platform underpinning the Giulia and Stelvio, the large crossover could be offered with the option of seven seats across three rows.

A new drivetrain with a 48V electric system, mild-hybrid capability, and an electric supercharger is said to be on the cards. It's hoped this setup will counteract this model's extra 200kg of weight.

Should these models come to fruition, the company will come close to realising an earlier plan to grow Alfa Romeo into a true competitor for BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.

The original plan called for eight new models by 2018, but due to various reasons the number of models has been cut back, and the timeline pushed out.
