2018 Skoda Karoq pricing and specs – UPDATE

New SUV arrives July 2 from $29,990

Update (15/5/18): Skoda Australia has confirmed the Launch Pack is limited to just 260 units, and that these vehicles won't be available with the 10-speaker sounds system offered in the Tech Pack. See bottom of article for details.

Local pricing and specifications for the 2018 Skoda Karoq have been revealed this week, ahead its July on-sale date.

Just one engine and trim level will be offered at launch, in the form of the 1.5 TSI, with prices starting at $29,990 plus on-road costs. Power in this model is provided by a 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo petrol, sending drive exclusively to the front wheels.

Peak power is available from 5000 to 6000rpm, while maximum torque is on tap from 1500 to 3500rpm. The base variant is mated as standard to a six-speed manual, with a seven-speed DSG automatic available as an option (from $32,290).

Skoda claims the 1.5 TSI will hit 100km/h from standstill in 8.4 seconds (8.6 for the DSG), and fuel consumption is rated at 5.7L/100km (5.8L/100km for DSG).

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring, keyless entry and start, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight-speaker audio system, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, LED daytime-running lights, LED ambient interior lighting, privacy glass, and an electric parking brake.

There's also automatic headlights and wipers, front fog-lights, a three-spoke leather sports multifunction steering wheel, silver roof rails, two tablet holders for rear passengers, and a double-sided mat in the luggage compartment.

In terms of safety and driver assistance kit, the Karoq comes as standard with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, driver fatigue monitor, seven airbags, and a rear-view camera.

Skoda is touting the Karoq's impressive practicality stats, aided by the company's VarioFlex seating system, which allows the three individual rear seats to be independently adjusted or removed (below).

The clever system also allows the Karoq to be configured as a five-, four- or three-seater. Luggage capacity in the back measures 479 litres with the rear seats upright and in their most rearward position.  Sliding the second row forward opens the rear cargo area to 588L, while folding the rear seats flat expands that figure to 1605L. Additionally, completely removing the three seats in the back turns the Karoq into a capacious van, with luggage capacity rated at a massive 1810L.

Those figures are pretty competitive for the class, including sales leaders Mazda CX-5 (442L/1342L) and Hyundai Tucson (488L/1478L).

While higher-spec variants are lacking in the local line-up at this stage, Skoda Australia is offering four option packages so owners can up-spec their Karoq.

First is the Premium Pack ($3600), which includes full-LED headlights with adaptive front lights, leather-appointed upholstery, 18-inch alloys, front parking sensors, automatic tailgate, and steel pedals.

The Tech Pack ($3200) brings a gesture-operated tailgate, the 9.2-inch satellite navigation system with gesture control and 10 years of MapCare, Park Assist 3.0 for parallel, parallel exit, reverse and forward perpendicular parking, a 10-speaker sound system, selectable driving modes, configurable vehicle set up via key, wireless smartphone charging, and DAB+ digital radio.

For those wanting the full suite of driver-assist systems, the Travel Pack ($1700) adds lane assist, blind-spot assist and rear cross-traffic alert, in addition to an electric driver's seat with memory, auto-folding and auto-dimming side mirrors with memory and courtesy lighting, along with heated front seats.

There's also a limited-run Launch Pack ($8900, 260 units), which combines the aforementioned packages into one. However, this also includes the three year/45,000km service package, and doesn't include the 10-speaker sound system.

Other cost options include a panoramic sunroof ($1900), metallic/pearl paint ($700), and 19-inch alloy wheels ($700).

Buyers hoping to option the expansive Active Info digital driver's display (replacing the conventional speed and revs meters) will have to wait, however, with high global demand keeping it from our market until the fourth quarter as a 2019 upgrade.

The Skoda Karoq range goes on sale July 2.
