Suzuki Swift: Global sales hit six million

Japanese light hatch is the brand's top-seller in Australia

The Suzuki Swift has reached a sales milestone this week, with the little hatchback reaching six million units globally since its launch over a decade ago.

Now in its fourth generation, the Swift is sold in 158 nations and regions including Japan, Europe, India and Australia.

Michael Pachota, general manager for Suzuki Australia, said the light hatch is a sales favourite in Australia, with the number of units sold locally sitting at six figures.

"In Australia alone, over 142,000 units of the Swift product have sold since it entered the market in 2005," he said.

"These numbers are a testament to the Swift’s ever evolving dynamic design and styling coupled with benchmark technology and safety features."

Last month, 525 Swifts were registered in Australia according to VFACTS, up 144.2 per cent compared to April last year, giving it a market share of 10.4 per cent in the light car class.

Year-to-date (YTD), the little Suzuki has shifted 2660 units, which is up an impressive 98.8 per cent on the same period in 2017.

The current-generation Swift range launched locally in June 2017, and was then bolstered by the Swift Sport hot hatch earlier this year.

Note: The Suzuki Cultus of the 1980s – badged in here as the Swift and Holden Barina – is not included in the above figures
