2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS spied with less camouflage

Big SUV inches towards production

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLS has been spied, just a day after our spy photography agency nabbed pictures of the new GLE.

Unlike the GLE we saw yesterday, which had plain black camouflage and many exposed body panels, this GLS is covered from head to toe in black and white swirls.

Compared to earlier prototypes, though, this car features only a few false body panels, all of which are located on the front and rear bumpers, and serve to obscure the false air vents and diffusers.

Even with all the eye-distracting camouflage on, we can see the new GLS sticks closely to the Mercedes-Benz styling book. Compared to the upcoming GLE, the new GLS looks to have a more rectangular set of headlights, a more formal grille, a different rear door design, and a continuous side window graphic.

As is currently the case, the GLS also seems to be significantly larger, and will surely continue to offer three rows of seats.

Under the skin, the GLS and GLE will share the same platform, although the GLS will have a longer wheelbase. Motivation will likely come from turbocharged V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid option.

Inside, we'll be amazed if the GLS doesn't feature two large high-resolution screens, one ahead of the driver, and one in the middle of the dashboard.

Given how the GLS is wearing significantly more disguise than the GLE, we expect the GLS to give the new GLE at least a six month head start on the market.
