What happens when motorsport meets practical French commercial vehicles?

Renault is no stranger to Formula 1-themed special editions, but the motorsport magic is usually sprinkled over hot hatches. This time, the company has applied it to the Trafic van, creating the limited-edition Trafic Formula Edition.

Just 125 examples will be offered, priced from $41,990 before on-road costs in short-wheelbase guise, or $43,490 before on-roads as a long-wheelbase van.

This isn't the first time Renault has applied its F1 branding to the Trafic – last year, we saw 80 special-editions bearing the same Formula Edition name.

Like those cars, the 2018 model is finished in Storm Grey or Jet Black to contrast with the yellow exterior highlights. As before, there are yellow add-ons around the badge, rear lights and door rails, along with yellow centre caps on the black 17-inch alloy wheels and suitably loud graphics down the side of the car.

There are new daytime running lights, however, helping set the new Formula Edition apart from last year's effort. Not exactly a Trafic-stopping change, but nice nonetheless.

Jumping inside, the seats are trimmed in 'Dark Java' cloth. You get a seven-inch media navigation system, a heated driver's seat, a 'premium' dashboard with storage compartment, chrome surrounds for the instrument binnacle, gloss black air vent surrounds and unique floor mats.

Power comes from the twin-turbo 1.6-litre engine with 103kW and 340Nm, for a 10.8-second sprint to 100km/h. It's paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

Pricing for the Formula Edition will start at $41,990 before on-roads for the short-wheelbase Trafic, or $43,490 before on-roads for the long-wheelbase.
