2018 BMW M5 Competition revealed

Powered-up super sedan priced from $229,000 in Australia

The 2018 BMW M5 Competition has been officially revealed, bringing increased performance and unique features to the Bavarian super sedan.

Set to be priced from $229,900 before on-road costs in Australia, the M5 Competition boasts a beefier version of the standard car's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, which now pumps out 460kW of power (+19kW) at 6000rpm, though torque is still pegged at 750Nm – available from 1800-5800rpm.

Fuel consumption – not that any buyers would really care, is rated at 10.8L/100km on the combined cycle.

With that extra grunt, the M5 Competition claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 3.3 seconds (down 0.1 seconds), with 0-200km/h achieved in 10.8 seconds (down 0.3 seconds).

Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h out of the factory, though with the optional M Driver's Package, that figure increases to 305km/h.

Distinguishing the M5 Competition from the regular M5 are the blacked-out exterior accents – including the front grille, badging, mirrors, boot lip spoiler, diffuser insert and tailpipes – a model-specific M Sport exhaust system, body-coloured door handles, and special 20-inch forged lightweight alloys wrapped in 275/35 front and 285/35 rear tyres.

The ride height has also been dropped by 7mm and there's increased camber on the front axle, along with model-specific engine mounts.

There are more unique appointments inside, including black seatbelts with M tri-colour striping, piped floor mats with M5 logos, and a model-specific 'M5 Competition' graphic in the instrument cluster whenever the start button is pressed.

There's also Merino Aragon full-leather upholstery, and 'aluminium carbon structure' interior trim with dark chrome accents.

Australia

BMW's local division has confirmed the M5 Competition will arrive in Australia "in the second half of 2018", with full pricing and specifications to be revealed closer to launch. For now, we know the car will kick off at $229,000 before on-road costs.
