Volvo Cars and Trucks to share live vehicle data
Designed to help make the roads safer
Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks will team up to share live traffic and safety data, in an attempt to form a critical mass of connected vehicles for improved safety.
Although they both use the same name and badge, Volvo Cars and Volvo Trucks are actually separate companies, which makes this the first time Volvo Cars has shared safety-related data with another company.
Live, anonymised data will be shared between some Volvo trucks and cars sold in Norway and Sweden, fitted with the relevant hazard-alert systems.
In cars, that system is Hazard Light Alert Technology, which alerts nearby Volvo drivers when someone puts their warning lights on. It's most useful on blind corners or crested roads, but relies on lots of vehicles using to technology for maximum effectiveness.
"Sharing real-time safety data based on our connected safety technology can help avoid accidents,” said Malin Ekholm, Volvo Cars Safety Centre vice president.
"The more vehicles we have sharing safety data in real time, the safer our roads become. We look forward to establishing further collaborations with other partners who share our commitment to traffic safety."
Volvo likens this pairing to its "strong history" of sharing safety information, including the patent for the three-point seatbelt in 1959. We're not sure this is quite on the same level, but it's a positive step nonetheless.
"Connected safety allows Volvo drivers to virtually ‘see around the corner’ and avoid a critical situation or accident before it happens,” said Ekholm.
"The ability to see further ahead and avoid hazards is something we want to share with as many drivers as possible.”
