Though audit testing results in reduced full-width frontal test score for rear passengers
The 2018 Kia Stinger now wears a five-star ANCAP rating across the entire model range, thanks to the addition of safety technologies like autonomous-emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keep assist to entry-level 200S and 330S variants.
Announced by the independent crash-testing authority this week, all versions of the Stinger produced from February 2018 onwards are fitted with the required safety assistance systems to satisfy the criteria for a five-star rating, amending the previous three-star result the base models scored at launch.
However, ANCAP notes it conducted a full-width frontal crash test of an Australian-specification Kia Stinger for audit purposes, which saw the vehicle score just 3.88 points out of 8.00.
While that score means the Stinger maintains its overall Adult Occupant Protection score of 85.2 per cent, and thus keeps its five-star safety rating, the dummy readings from the audit test indicated poor protection for the head, chest, and pelvis body regions for the rear passenger – a significant decrease from the 6.45/8 scored by the Stinger in Euro NCAP testing.
It's worth noting that Australian-market Stingers don't get rear seatbelt pretensioners like Euro-delivered models.
The news follows our coverage a fortnight ago confirming Kia Australia had added AEB, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control to entry-level 'S' variants of the Stinger, which previously had no form of active safety technology on the features list, even as an option.
With the safety upgrade, the 200S and 330S are now priced from $46,990 and $49,990 before on-road costs respectively (+$1000), undercutting the mid-range Si versions by $6000.
