BMW M2 Competition: M Performance parts revealed

Carbon, carbon and more carbon

The new BMW M2 Competition hasn't even hit showrooms yet, but that hasn't stopped the Bavarian manufacturer from revealing its latest line of M Performance accessories for the hottest version of its smallest performance model.

Available as genuine BMW accessories, the M Performance parts line-up for the M2 Competition includes an array of weight-saving and cosmetic components, along with a motorsport-inspired drive analyser that synchronises with your smartphone.

Highlights of the accessories range include an M Performance suspension kit, that can be lowered by up to 20mm while allowing for 12 damping compression and 16 damper rebound settings. There's also 19-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels (pictured) which save 3.2kg of unsprung mass, and M Compound brake discs with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

Wrapped around the aforementioned alloys (available in Jet Black matte or Frozen Gold) are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres upon request, further enhancing the M2's grip on the tarmac.

In addition to the various suspension and brake/wheel/tyre upgrades, the M2 Competition can be had with numerous carbon-fibre body components, which not only look cool but also save weight.

There's a carbon-fibre bonnet (including a power dome) which saves around 9kg, a carbon-fibre roof (5kg saving), along with a carbon-fibre tailgate (6kg saving).

Other carbon-trimmed elements include the front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, front grille, mirror caps, boot spoiler, rear wing, engine cover, and "air breather side bars".

Complimenting the carbon-themed rear end treatments is the M Performance exhaust system (above), which features a titanium silencer and four 93mm tailpipes finished in carbon-fibre. The adaptive system offers three modes (Efficient, Sport and Sport+), and also saves around 8kg over the standard system.

Meanwhile, the M Performance Drive Analyser has been developed specifically for track use, monitoring driving speed, engine data, accelerator and brake use along with lateral acceleration through an OBD stick (On-Board Diagnostics). The device sends data straight to a special smartphone app.

Finally, there's several door and interior accessories available for the M2 Competition (though not pictured), including new LED door projectors which "slide" graphics along the sides of the vehicle. There's also a new M Performance steering wheel 'Pro' trimmed in leather and Alcantara, or a similar unit with a race display and carbon-fibre trim instead.

When optioned with the race display, the steering wheel will project stopwatch and a G-force meter in Sport mode, or a stopwatch in Race mode. Additionally, there's a gear shift indicator with coloured LED on the left and right of the race display.

Carbon-fibre/Alcantara components for the gearshift/gear knob and vehicle key are also available.

Australia

We've reached out to BMW's local division regarding Australian availability of the M Performance accessories range for the M2 Competition, and are awaiting a response.

The BMW M2 Competition is due to arrive in local showrooms before the end of the year. Stay tuned for an update.
