Resto-modding is all the rage at the moment, with manufacturers digging out their classic blueprints and diving into the world of hand-beaten panels, all to serve the demands of a very wealthy few.
Owners of the original 300SL Gullwing will now be able to order new metal parts for their cars, fresh from the factory in Stuttgart. The parts come from an external, trusted supplier with access to 3D data from the original car's body.
Metal parts developed using this process are then hand-shaped with wooden mallets, in a process described as the "symbiosis between state-of-the-art production technology and traditional craftsmanship" for an accurate, period-correct fit.
As you might imagine, this period-correct accuracy doesn't come cheap – quite the opposite, in fact. Prices are listed below.
- Front panelling left - €11,900 ($19,000)
- Front panelling right - €11,900
- Rear panelling left - €14,875 ($23,600)
- Rear panelling right - €14,875
- Rear-end centre section - €2975 ($4720)
- Rear-end floor - €8925 ($14,100)
Then again, if you've got the money for a 300SL, that's probably peanuts.
