2018 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid unveiled
And it's available with the brand's first head-up display
Porsche has added a plug-in E-Hybrid version to the Cayenne range, complete with 340kW and a whopping 700Nm.
Power in the E-Hybrid comes from a 3.0-litre V6 making 250kW, coupled with a 100kW electric motor for a 340kW combined power output. More importantly, 700Nm of torque is available 'just above idle' for instant response off the line.
The hybrid control module has been reworked for 2018, with Porsche claiming it reacts faster than before and, crucially, feels cohesive with the eight-speed automatic transmission offered across the Cayenne range.
That slug of low-down torque helps deliver a 5.0-second sprint to 100km/h, on the way to a 253km/h top speed. Porsche is claiming 44km of range and a 135km/h top speed in electric mode, although the car's figures were measured on the notoriously generous New European Drive Cycle (NEDC).
Compared to the previous Cayenne E-Hybrid, the new model has a larger 14.1kWh battery pack. It's fluid cooled and stored under the boot floor, with a claimed 7.8-hour charge time for on a 10A, 230V connection. Owners who spec the optional 7.2kW on-board charger and plug into a 230V, 32A connection, the charge time drops to just 2.3 hours.
Power is put to the road through an all-wheel drive system capable of shuffling torque across the front or rear axle using an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch. Adaptive suspension is standard, but you'll pay extra for Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll-stabilisation. There's also an optional trailer hitch for towing up to 3.5 tonnes.
Inside, the E-Hybrid is available with a head-up display – a first for Porsche. Among the wider range of options is 22-inch alloy wheels and an InnoDrive package with adaptive cruise control, massaging seats and a heated windscreen.

The new Cayenne E-Hybrid will priced from $135,600 before on-road costs in Australia, with deliveries to start in the third quarter of 2018.
Australian cars will gain surround view cameras, privacy glass, auto-dimming exterior and interior mirrors, rear side airbags, lane-change assist, the comfort memory package and DAB+ digital radio as standard equipment.
