Here’s a look at what happened on the week of May 1 in years past.



1 May 2016: 2016 BMW M4 GTS DTM Safety Car revealed

On this day two years ago, BMW unveiled a special version of its wild M4 GTS track weapon, designed to be the pace car in Germany's popular DTM racing series.

Just a handful of modifications were made, including a roll cage, fire extinguisher, six-point harness, roof-mounted LED bar and modified headlights to flash automatically as required.

Additionally, the M4 GTS DTM Safety Car got a special livery for the 2016 season.



3 May 2013: Porsche 911 Turbo S revealed

It's now been five years since the '991' Porsche 911 Turbo S was revealed, packing 412kW of power and any transmission you desired – provided it was a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Aided by a clever new all-wheel drive system, the 2013 911 Turbo S could sprint from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 318km/h.



1 May 2010: Hyundai Elantra debuts in Busan

The turn of the decade saw the previous-generation Hyundai Elantra make its public premiere at the Busan motor show in South Korea.

Badged as the 'Avante' in its home market, the Elantra was a big step forward from its predecessor in terms of design, and also featured a new 1.6-litre 'Gamma' petrol engine.

It eventually made  it to Australia a year later.



1 May 2008: Volkswagen Amarok spied

It's been a whole decade since we first saw spy photos of Volkswagen's first ute – which would become the Amarok.

At the time, the new pick-up was believed to be named the 'Robust', developed to help the German automotive giant overtake Toyota as the world's top-selling vehicle manufacturer.

The production version was revealed at the end of 2009, before arriving in Australia in 2011.
