2018 Mini Hatch, Convertible initial detais

Price bump brings more value, diesel discontinued for Australia

Mini Australia has announced pricing and specs for the facelifted Hatch and Convertible ranges, which touch down locally on July 1.

After being treated to a mid-life spruce-up (or a Life Cycle Impulse in BMW-speak), the Cooper Hatch 3 Door will be priced from $29,900 before on-road costsup $1990 on the current model – although Mini says you get $3600 worth of extra gear.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol making 100kW and 220Nm, putting power to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission or six-speed manual.

Jumping to the Cooper S bumps that figure to $39,700 (+$200), with Mini claiming it packs $1100 more value than before. As before, it's powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol with 141kW and 280Nm, hooked up to a six-speed manual or (new) seven-speed dual-clutch.

The John Cooper Works (JCW) is up to $49,900 (+$1000) as well, carrying the same claimed $1100 value bump. It carries the same 2.0-litre engine with 170kW of power and 320Nm of torque as before, put to the front wheels through the same eight-speed torque-converter automatic.

The Cooper 5 Door will start at $31,150 before on-roadsa $1900 increase on the outgoing car, although the company once again says it packs $3600 worth of extra gear. The Cooper S 5 Door is priced from $41,150 (+$200).

Finally, the Mini Convertible will start at $40,990 before on-roads (+$1390), jumping to $47,900 (+400) for the Cooper S and $57,900 (+$1000) for the JCW.

Across the range, the Hatch and Convertible line-up have gained a touchscreen infotainment system as standard, along with Mini Connected 4G capability and Apple CarPlay for three years.

That's right, it's a BMW Group product, but you don't have to option CarPlay  – a nod to the younger Mini audience, perhaps?

The LCI update has brought new LED head- and tail-lights to the range, although you'll have to pay extra for the (sharp) Union Jack look on the base Cooper. They're standard on the Cooper S and Cooper JCW.

Five extra colours have been added to the palette: Solaris Orange, Emerald Grey, Starlight Blue, Melting Silver and Chilli Red. Along with the fresh paint options, Mini Yours customisation will be offered – if there's a message or pattern you want for the dash, door sills or puddle lights, the company will 3D print it for you.
