Because Ve-larve it so much
Customisation is in vogue at the moment, but choice can be seriously confusing. In our new configurator challenge, we’re going to let the CarAdvice team loose on a manufacturer’s website to create their ideal spec of a certain model.
For this edition of the Configurator Challenge, we’re designing our perfect Range Rover Velar.

The Velar has always been billed as the 'avantgarde' Range Rover, but while many will put stupidly large wheels on theirs to give the false impression that it's a sports car, I've gone for the more understated route and made mine a comfortable grand tourer.
For my perfect Range Rover Velar, I've selected the P380 R-Dynamic SE (from $119,462), because who doesn't love the sound of Jaguar Land Rover's 280kW/450Nm 3.0-litre supercharged V6?
I chose the SE grade because most British vehicles are best value in mid-range SE-spec, while the R-Dynamic package gives the Velar a sportier look – and those big exposed tailpipe finishers to match the performance of that V6, tick.
For the exterior, I've opted for Silicon Silver premium metallic, which has a lovely bronze tinge to it, along with a contrasting black roof and sliding panoramic sunroof – have to enjoy those sunny summer days.
The 19-inch five-spoke alloys in Satin Grey may seem like an odd choice, but I like their understated aesthetic and the chubbier rubber means it will ride beautifully like a Range Rover should. Other options for my Velar's exterior include the Black Pack, and privacy glass.
Inside, I chose the Light Oyster/Ebony perforated Windsor leather for a cool dual-tone colour scheme that also features a Union Jack perforation pattern, 20-way adjustment for the front seats with memory, heating and ventilation, extended leather trim for the doors and dashboard, Copper Weave Carbon Fibre trim inserts, Ebony Morzine headliner, and a head-up display.
As for other cost options, I've ticked several packages including the Drive Pro Pack (adaptive cruise, blind-spot assist), the Climate Pack (quad-zone climate control, lockable cooled glovebox), the On/Off Road Pack (Terrain Response 2, Configurable Dynamics), along with a full-size spare wheel, automatic park assistant, 360-degree cameras with wade sensing, carpet mats (really?), configurable ambient interior lighting, an electrically-adjustable steering column, DAB+ digital radio, rear-seat remote release levers, and extra USB ports in the second row.
I can only imagine how much this would all cost – I'd say I'm knocking on the door of $150,000 at this point – but I reckon my Velar is the perfect blend of performance and luxury, while featuring that beautiful supercharged V6 soundtrack to contrast with its understated looks.
Tell me it's not your favourite one here – I'll wait.

Alright, prepare for lesson in speccing a British four-wheel drive. It's tempting to go full-gangster, with oversized wheels and bright colours, but I've elected to keep things relatively low-key, with an Indus Silver paint job and contrast black roof.
In R-Dynamic P380 SE (from $119,462) trim, the car comes as standard with Matrix LED headlights and privacy glass, which look brilliant when coupled with my 21-inch Style '5047' alloy wheels. There are bigger options, but we don't need them here because of subtlety and taste.
Inside, I've eschewed leather for Dapple Grey Premium Non Leather with Light Oyster Suede. Why not leather? Well, it gets hot in Australia, and non-leather seats are better in summer – especially when they're heated and cooled, which these ones are. Coupled with a light headliner, they make for a light, bright feeling inside.
On the options front, my Velar has no model badge, the on/off road package, a loadspace partition and a space saver. That took a lot of restraint, because there's a lot of options. But, as with the exterior, less is more.

I have waited for the day where I get to make a full gangsta Range Rover. If anyone, like me, has a hip-hop Spotify playlist stowed away for solo drives - you too will know that rap artists seriously love a Rangie – and so do I.
This is my Velar R-Dynamic HSE (from $112,962). Starting with the exterior, I've gone the Yulong White pearl with black roof. I am choosing to roll on 22-inch dubs in a gloss-black finish. If they were shadow chrome spinners, that would be even better. Can you still buy spinners? Brb, Gumtree...
Of course, I chose a sliding panoramic roof for drive-by's – and by this, I mean driving past unsuspecting cars, singing Nelly's Country Grammar word-for-word in my god-like voice. Although I've added rear privacy glass, I better put darkest legal tint all round. I don't want anyone I know to actually see me. In addition to this, the R-Dynamic Black Pack has completed the look with darkened grille, door and exhaust finishers.
On the inside, I have chosen two-tone Ivory/Black leather trim. I selected carbon-fibre trim finishers around the cabin, suede cloth steering wheel and headlining, in addition to 20-way driver/passenger seats with seat massagers and heating/cooling.
I chose the 221kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol (I know), because the diesels are louder and I want to get the most out of my 1600W 23 speaker system. A trip to Autobarn will also get me some extra 15-inch sub-woofers in a box.
To finish the look, I added air-suspension (which isn't available in other engine trims...yeahhh!), plus added DAB+ digital radio and screens with Digital TV for all my homies at the back.
I spared no cost when it came to speccing this vehicle. Ah, why do I live this way? (Hey, must be the money I'm pretending to have!)

I’ve gone all black everything sitting on a set of 22’s – it’s a Range Rover after all!
Contrasting the murdered out exterior, I’ve gone with a classy cream leather interior complimented by the Meridian Signature Sound System (23 Speakers, 1600W) and a fixed panoramic roof.
I was going to select the 280kW 3.0-litre supercharged V6, but that’s being a little greedy. In actual fact I’d take the D300 V6 turbo-diesel providing better economy on longer trips and torque around town.
My two favourite features were: the Activity Key - whether surfing or snowboarding, this waterproof active key is my favourite new car feature of 2018 – and the rear-seat remote release levers - if you're loading sporting equipment in and out of the car, this is a must.
