Geely unveils Bo Rui GE with Volvo hybrid power

Plug-in and mild-hybrid sedans unveiled

Geely Auto has unveiled its 'new energy flagship sedan' – dubbed Bo Rui GE – in Beijing this week, complete with an electrified powertrain from subsidiary Volvo.

Power in the Bo Rui GE comes from a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a plug-in hybrid system for claimed combined consumption of just 1.6L/100km.

Along with the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, the Beijing motor show played host to the launch of a 48V mild-hybrid (MHEV) version of the car. Although it shares its 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engine with the PHEV, the mild hybrid consumes 5.8L/100km on the combined cycle.

On the outside, the sedan's unique grille treatment and light signatures have apparently been inspired by traditional Chinese fans and gymnasts with ribbons, while the interior is designed to act as a 'third living space' for drivers.

The target buyer for the car was born in the mid-1980s or early-1990s, with a sense of pride in China's technology. Say what you will about Chinese carmakers, they don't mess about when it comes to nailing down demographics.

"China has emerged as the largest market in the global car industry, accounting to about 40% of global sales with 30 million new cars each year," said Peter Horbury, Geely senior vice president of design.

"Chinese consumers have also become more sophisticated and mature than ever before. Working to satisfy the needs of this new generation of vehicle users has helped us evolved into a confident global brand capable of developing segment leading cars that contains subtle hints of its Chinese origin."

This focus on alternative power sources is aimed at getting Geely in shape for 2020, by which point the company wants 90 per cent of its cars to be EV, PHEV or mild hybrid. The plan is to have 65 per cent hybrid, 35 per cent pure-electric by the turn of the decade.
