2018 Hyundai i20 revealed for Europe – UPDATE

Fresh looks, new tech for light hatch family, but still not for Australia

UPDATE (26/4/18): Hyundai Australia has ruled out the new i20 for our market. See bottom of article for details.

The refreshed 2018 Hyundai i20 range has been revealed for Europe, bringing an updated design along with a range of new infotainment and driver assistance technologies to the Korean light hatch family.

As before, the i20 will be available in three-door, five-door (pictured in red), and crossover 'Active' bodies (pictured in blue). New design features include Hyundai's signature 'Cascading Grille' on the five-door model, new front and rear bumpers, revised tail-lights, new alloy wheel designs, along with the option of a contrasting black roof for the five-door and Active models.

The updated i20 also offers a handful of new colour options, including the Tomato Red and Champion Blue pictured here, along with Clean Slate – a hue offered on the i30 N.

Changes have been made to the interior too, with new Blue and Red colour options that accent the cabin trims. There's new infotainment options as well, including a 7.0-inch navigation system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, similar to the unit used in the current Kia Rio.

In addition to the interior tech, the new i20 range offers the availability of Hyundai's SmartSense driver assistance suite, meaning autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keep assist, high-beam assist, driver attention monitoring are all offered as part of the upgraded range.

Finally, there's a range of new engines on offer, with the entire powertrain line-up compliant with Euro 6d regulations.

Buyers can choose from a 1.0-litre T-GDi turbo triple, available in 70kW or 88kW tunes, a 1.2-litre 'Kappa' naturally-aspirated petrol in 55kW and 62kW guises, while the i20 Active exclusively offers a 74kW 1.4-litre 'Kappa' naturally-aspirated four.

Five-speed manual transmissions are standard on low-output engine variants, while six-speeder units are standard on high-output tunes. Additionally, the 1.0 T-GDi offers a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic as an option – a first for the i20 range.

All engines feature idle stop/start technology, while the 1.0 T-GDi adds a built-in particulate filter for the new range to "enhance environmental performance".

Australia

The i20 was axed in Australia when the current generation went on sale in Europe, due to the high costs of sourcing the light hatch from the company's European manufacturing plant.

Hyundai's local division confirmed with CarAdvice there are still "no current plans" to bring the i20 Down Under.
