Jeep Grand Commander debuts in Beijing

Outputs and dimensions confirmed for Chinese-market SUV

The Jeep Grand Commander has been officially revealed and detailed for the Chinese market at the Beijing motor show.

We've already seen the design of the exterior and interior, but the Grand Commander's public debut also brought new details of the company's first three-row SUV since the Commander of last decade.

Jeep has confirmed the 2.0-litre turbo four puts out 172kW of power and 350Nm of torque, which is slightly down on the new Cherokee's 201kW/400Nm engine of the same capacity – which is odd considering the Grand Commander is a much larger car. Drive is sent to either the front or all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Despite being a seven seater, the Grand Commander actually isn't much larger dimensionally than the Grand Cherokee. According to Autoblog, the Chinese-market Grand Commander is only 2.0in (51mm) longer than its global stablemate, while also being around 50mm narrower and sporting a 100mm-shorter wheelbase.

For markets outside of China, it appears lovers of the Jeep brand will have to wait a little longer for a three-row SUV, in the forms of the upcoming Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer – scheduled to go into production before 2020.
