MG X-Motion concept unveiled

Previews new range-topping model

The MG X-Motion concept has been given a full debut at the 2018 Beijing motor show.

Stylistically, the concept takes themes established by last year's E-Motion electric coupe and scales them to suit a crossover.

Up front, the X-Motion features a fascia heavily inspired by Mazda, while the "stellar field" grille insert calls to mind a number of Mercedes-Benz models. There's also more than a hint of Infiniti in the profile and headlights.

Some exisiting models in MG's range, including the ZS crossover, MG3 hatch and MG6 sedan, have been upgraded with the new corporate face.

Both MG and SAIC, its parent company, have provided almost no hard details about the X-Motion or its future production progeny.

According to the Chinese automaker, the X-Motion is a "world-leader in the field of mainstream SUV design as it utilises exceptionally sensual surface and shadow shoulder".

MG also promises the X-Motion will feature "advanced technology" and "include full connectivity".

SAIC says it was "driven by a commitment to innovative transformation", and the X-Motion concept has an "electric powertrain, interconnection, intelligence and information sharing".

Despite that, the X-Motion concept features dual exhaust tips out the back, suggesting a hybrid drivetrain utilising an internal-combustion engine of some form.

The production version of the X-Motion is expected to go into production in 2019, and will go on sale first in China. It's not known whether the range-topping crossover will be sold in more developed markets.

Daniel Gregorious, head of sales and marketing at MG UK, said the X-Motion is proof MG is "a serious player in the global market with advanced tech and stunning design", but admitted the UK arm was had yet "to decide whether X-motion will come to the UK".
