2018 Skoda Kamiq revealed

New baby SUV to launch in China over coming months

The new Skoda Kamiq crossover has been officially revealed ahead of its debut at the Beijing motor show later this week, with the new model to go on sale in China in just a "couple of months" time.

Joining the larger Karoq and Kodiaq in the Czech brand's Chinese line-up, the Kamiq is the littlest member of its SUV family, measuring 4390mm long, 1781mm wide and 1593mm tall – roughly the same size as a Nissan Qashqai.

Powering the new model is a 1.5-litre petrol engine developing 81kW of power and 150Nm of torque, mated to "an automatic gearbox" – though the company hasn't detailed whether the transmission is a torque-converter or dual-clutch unit, nor which wheels the Kamiq drives.

In terms of its design the Kamiq features several cues from the wider Skoda range, including the V-shaped front grille with vertical double slats which extend into the headlights, along with the prominent character lines on the bonnet and sides. Filling the arches are 17-inch alloy wheels.

While there are no images of the interior yet, the Kamiq features an 8.0-inch "raised infotainment display in the centre of the dashboard" featuring Apple CarPlay, along with a new intelligent voice control system from iFlytek – one of Asia's leading providers of voice recognition systems.

According to Skoda, the technology understands regional Chinese dialects and can "even learn individual and local language styles automatically".

The Kamiq's media system is also capable of providing a guide for road restrictions based on number plates, time traffic updates, weather information and points of interest (POI) notifications.
